To get the ANSI demo working, if youre in a UNIX console make sure your screen font is 8x9 or at least 40 lines, or an xterm that is at least 80x40, then just gzip -dc elite.txt.gz. For those of you in Windows XP or 2000, do the following by adding this line to your C:\windows\system32\config.nt file:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ANSI.SYS
And then start->run->COMMAND.COM. It's important that this is not CMD.EXE. Now, right click the title bar then go to properties, then the font tab. Set the window height and buffer height to 50. Now fullscreen the window via CTRL-ENTER. Now, download A_TYPE, a sweet ANSI.SYS aware type.exe replacement from 1991. Now, just decompress elite.txt.gz and then run A_TYPE elite.txt from inside the full screened COMMAND.COM window.
